Deutsche Werke's roots were in constructing ships for the German military. Ortgies & Co. already had a manufacturing facility in Erfurt, Germany. After buying out Ortgies & Co., Deutsche Werke continued to produce the Ortgies pistol at the same facility instead of tooling another location for firearms production.Deutsche Werke ceased production of the Ortgies pistol in 1923. The Treaty of Versailles impacted all firearms production in Germany, closing many independent firearms manufacturers across the country. The Deutsche Werke Ortgies pistol is a notable example of the quality and craftsmanship behind pre-World War I German firearms. No box one magazine
